FORMOSAT-2 mosaic of fires around the ancient sanctuary of Olympia

-

The ancient sanctuary of Olympia was saved from the forest fires that raged across Greece this summer. A fire burn extent map generated from a mosaic of FORMOSAT-2 orthoimages shows just how close the fires came.

Needs
-

Two needs were identified:
1) Rapid mapping of the extent and impact of the forest fires across Greece
2) Detailed mapping of affected areas like the sanctuary of Olympia in the Peloponnese

- -
Solution
-

Spot Image tasked the FORMOSAT-2 satellite to meet this dual need.
FORMOSAT-2 satellite imagery is ideal for:
1. timely assessment of fire impact, with its daily revisit capability
2. detailed imaging of fire-affected areas, thanks to its high resolution (2 metres)

-
Mosaics provide an innovative solution
-

A large number of FORMOSAT-2 scenes were acquired to cover the forest fires across the Peloponnese peninsula. As the Olympia site is located at scene edges, they had to be mosaicked.
Spot Image has acquired new processing capability for producing orthorectified mosaics from different satellite data sources, including FORMOSAT-2.
