Spot Image launches development of automatic orthoimage production system

-

Toulouse, 17 December 2003 : Following a study conducted by Spot Image and CNES to define the detailed design of an integrated system for automatic production of orthoimages, two development contracts have been signed with industry partners. The design is based on the results of the feasibility study and prototypes developed by the French survey and mapping agency IGN and Spot Image in 2001.
Dubbed Andorre (for Atelier Num駻ique DORthoREctification, or digital orthorectification shop), this project has received funding support from ANVAR, the French innovation agency.

Development work has been split into two packages:

  • The first package, with CNES as prime contractor and covering development of industrial algorithms from CNES libraries and algorithms, has been awarded to Thales Information Systems.
  • The second package, covering system development and integration at Spot Image, has been awarded to CS Communication & Syst鑪es. It includes software for managing production, product quality control and editing, as well as the supply of equipment.

Automatic production of orthoimages is made possible thanks to the high location accuracy of imagery acquired by SPOT 5痴 HRS instrument. As a result, ground control points are no longer needed to generate digital elevation models (DEMs) and orthoimages. This reliable, cost-efficient and innovative system is geared toward reducing orthoimage production costs and delivering products more quickly to improve customer service. Although initially reserved for automatic production of SPOT imagery, the system will support production of orthoimagery from other sensors in the future.

This tool, which will be operational at Spot Image by end 2004, will also be marketed and sold to receiving stations with a SPOT 5 Terminal and to any organization with a Reference3D database required to orthorectify imagery.

Spot Image aims to bring users the full benefits of its experience and know-how by developing innovative production methods and a broad product portfolio. Through its global network of direct receiving stations, channel partners and distributors, the Spot Image group offers solutions for the private and public sectors all over the world.
